Blogging Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed: Part 9.5

Today is the day where I combine two class periods into one, because I have been not-so-diligent in keeping up to date with this blog. I've been busy, okay! Can you say schemes and tropes? x.x

Day 1:

So long, basketball.
I've been anticipating the volleyball unit for weeks. The last time I played volleyball it was at least three years ago and I didn't do so hot.
So when they sent us to the south gym (or east-west gym, whichever one is the dumpiest) and I saw a basket of volleyballs and a bunch of guys attempting to put up three volleyball nets, I knew I was in trouble.

Now for the shocker: to my surprise, I wasn't that bad! And by not bad, I mean I was able to make contact with the ball and send it in the direction I wanted to.

Volleyball is not unlike tennis. They both have the same goal: get the ball over the net.

Other than that they are as unalike as two sports can get. In volleyball, you do not have a racket. In volleyball, the ball bouncing means you just lost. And in volleyball, you have use your arms to hit the ball, which causes me physical pain about 99% of the time.
And serving...

In tennis, I kind of obsess over my serve, to put it mildly. I'm constantly trying to improve it, make it faster, harder, more accurate...yeah. My serve has been unique to me forever and ever.

I'm not sure how it's like for pro volleyball players and their serves, but I can tell you this. I. Cannot. Serve. In. Volleyball.

It's weird, because serving in volleyball is actually really similar to serving in tennis. I'm just weak. That's right, I'm blaming my lack of upper body strength

After serving, we played a game where someone would throw the ball to us, and we would try to hit it over the net. Every single time I ended up running into the net, not even touching the ball. Honestly, I'm not even sure how that happened.

Day 2:

This was one of those days that I really didn't want to try. The night before I had stayed up until 1 finishing my schemes and tropes project and I was too tired to move, much less play volleyball. And since I had a tournament the next day I whined about my knee a little and got a note.

But get this! They still had me play. They said, "well, just stand there on the court if you have to. Just don't work too hard."

Well, I get intense when I play sports. I want to try my hardest. And when there is a cute guy on your team who you know the only way to impress him is to win, you want to try even harder.
Another thing about Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed. Every time we play a game, my team loses. Like without fail. I really hope it isn't my fault!

So...yeah. I'm always afraid to get too specific with this blog, just in case someone might stumble upon it and be like "who the crap is this girl?! next time in class, I'm gonna kill her!" but I'm going to take the risk right about now.

Kaimana is pretty hot, but playing any sort of game with him gives just too much material for this blog than I can ignore. He is pretty crazy. And any time we lose, it really pisses him off. The only problem is I'm jinxed to always make my team lose, and he has been on my team the past 3 or 4 games we've played. And he kind of goes nuts when we lose. Which, I understand how that feels, but um...it's pretty funny to watch, not gonna lie. heh heh.

Nick was also on my team. And, Kate, this is for you, but he still looks like a dummy whenever we play sports. The contrast between how much of a d-bag he acts outside of class and how much of a loser he looks while we are playing is HILARIOUS.

Which I'm not really one to talk, since I'm not exactly fantastic at any of the sports we play, but sometimes it just feels good to point out these things.

Around my third game, the teachers started telling me to take it easy and I can sit out if I want, it's no big deal. But somehow volleyball is a really dangerous sport, because about half our class was sitting out with various injuries by then, and I felt fine-ish.

In the end, I'm thinking volleyball is going to be a very interesting unit. And I think my arms are going to fall off before the end.

Peace!

Blogging Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed: Part 8

Oh, humanity.

This time I was able to take a trip back in time to Fitness for Life. Oh freshmen year. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

Actually it was mostly the worst of times. And HALF of that was Fitness for Life.

Recently, I've become what I am proud to call athletic-ish. This is a case in which exercise doesn't bother me as it once did. However athletic a person may be, however, I would say Fitness for Life is still a class that is nearly impossible to enjoy. And here is one reason why:

We would play random, weird made up games. That sucked.

And today in class, we played one of those games.
They called it Gatorball. I just called it Why Is This Happening To Me? Suffice to say it was a complicated combination of soccer and...come to think of it, I don't really know. Basketball, maybe? Football? Rugby?

The main purpose of the game was to kick the ball into the goal. Which was really the only way it applied to me, since after wandering around aimlessly for a while, I decided to retreat back to my old, elementary school ways and be the goalie. I actually make an okay-ish goalie. My tactics were simple. When the ball comes towards you, move in front of it.

Most of my epic saves include the ball bouncing off of my legs or feet through sheer luck. Though I forsaw bruises in my not too distant future, my method was working...until we played the second team, who was significantly better and a lot more brutal than the first team we played. Suffice to say that I didn't make as many saves as before, but only because half of them I jumped out of the way to prevent my face getting knocked off by a soccerball coming towards me at about a billion miles per hour.

Luckily, I survived.

Time for a story. This is Tom. Tom graduated class of '79 at Timpview High School. He was a good kid, not the brightest tool in the shed, but passed with a solid 3.0 GPA. He enjoyed sports, he wrestled, played a little bit of baseball, but loved to play basketball. His favorite class that Timpview offered was Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed. When they played basketball he happily donned the red-orange mesh jersey he was given and ran out to play some ball, thus making the jersey all sweaty and gross, but it didn't matter, because Tom, a shy youngster who had great things coming for him, was having fun.

32 years later, Kaela picked up the same jersey dear Tom had once worn, and wondered, "How old is this thing? How many sweaty men-folk have worn this? It smells weird."

Honestly, I don't think those things have ever been replaced. And since the dawn of man, I have always thought they were gross and weird and I feel nasty whenever I put one on.

Moving on...

So we played real live actual not gatorball but actual soccer. Which lasted for about ten minutes. Because what happens when you get a bunch of guys together, playing a sport, feeling all sweaty, and wearing gross mesh jerseys? The testosterone levels go sky high! And what ends up happening is the guys try to see just how far they can kick the ball.

But what happens when you kick the ball up into the upper level of the Thunderdome? Apparently the janitor guy, Cliff, gets really, really mad! He chewed us, and the teachers, out for a while, and then left us wondering, what now? He told us that we can't kick the ball inside the gym. Which hopefully, will mean that we won't end up doing a soccer unit and it will be replaced with tennis!!

Quick note:
All the guys in that class know me as the girl who can't do anything right. And I don't blame them. My basketball skills are limited. The phrase "Kaela's soccer skills" is an oxymoron, or logical fallacy. Whatever those things are.
However, I know that if I could get onto a court, with a decent racket, (preferably my own, but I'm not picky. Actually, yes I am. Whatever.) then I could show those guys that I'm not a completely hopeless case! How would they feel then, after making fun of how short I am, and how bad I am at basketball, how would they feel after I totally wasted them in tennis?!
The truth is, either they wouldn't care at all, (which is most likely) or I might actually gain a few respect points from them! Ah! How fantastic would that be!?

Whew. Enough hopeless dreaming.

In the end, we ended up playing handball, which was basketball with a soccer ball. And I just kind of chilled out of the way.

Someday, I will prove myself in this Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed class. However, this day will more than likely not come during our soccer unit. I'm about 80% sure that Volleyball is next though. Wish. Me. Luck.

Peace!

Blogging Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed: Part 7

Basketball.
Volleyball.
Soccer.
Flag Football.

Those were the four sports listed in the disclosure.

Nowhere. I repeat, NOWHERE was listed the fateful sport of...dodgeball.

Truthfully, dodgeball could go a lot of different ways. It could be really fun. Or it could be really painful. In rare circumstances it is both, however that was not the case of today.

Honestly, today was mostly just fear.

First of all, our regular student teachers weren't there. So we had Coach Bailey, who in a lot of ways is like dodgeball. She can either be really fun, or just inspire fear and pain. (And by pain I just mean she makes you do pushups if you do ANYTHING wrong. Yikes.)

Second, it was a half day. Since we weren't playing basketball, and we didn't really have time to do anything else, she decided we would play some dodgeball. Except her ideas of dodgeball were not unlike that of a Nazi war camp.

We played 2 dodgeball games. The first was probably the worst. (Hey that rhymes!)

We were divided into two teams. One team had to run 20 frizbees from one end of the gym to the other. Without getting hit. Remember that little part. Without getting hit.

The other team stood on the side lines and threw dodgeballs at the people running back and forth.

If you got hit, you had to take your frizbee back to the other side of the gym, and then go sit down where you got hit. In other words, right in the middle of the battlefield.

Now, when it comes to dodgeball, I've always had a strategy, since I was in elementary school:

Stay unnoticed.

See, that way, I always last down to the last few people, so the others think "wow, Kaela is really good at this game." and then I try to get someone out, I get noticed, and I've been hit within 4 seconds.

It works, I promise.

However, Coach Bailey seems to have heard of this strategy before, because she saw right through me. Or maybe it wasn't just me. But when she blew her whistle and everyone just stood around looking like lost sheep, too afraid to run out into the war zone, she told us we had ten seconds to run before we all did pushups.

As it would happen, I was still able to last until the last few people. What can I say? I'm pretty agile.
But the only problem with lasting until the end, and then having to run, was that everyone on the other team wanted to take me down. Let me just paint you a picture of what that's like.

Okay, imagine that you are waiting for a train, a train that will take you far away. You know where you hope this train will take you, but you don't know for sure....

Just kidding.

Imagine that you are holding a frizbee. A frizbee that you have to take to the other end of the gym. Your team is depending on you. Even the really, really, REALLY smokin hot guy on your team is watching you. You've got to do this!! Half of the class has their eyes on you, dodgeballs at the ready, waiting for you to make your move. You step onto the court, and break into full sprint. Everywhere around you the balls go flying, whizzing past your head and arms and legs all while you are jumping over your team mates who sit, dejected in the middle of the battlefield. And then it happens. You are hit, not just once, not even just twice! But three, maybe four balls all hit you - arm, leg, back, and you know that it's over, you've failed, and now you too have to sit down in the middle of the war zone. And then, supposing you don't get hit, that you actually made it, you know that you have to do it all over again....

Anyways, that did happen a few times. Sometimes I made it, sometimes I didn't. It was an experience, to say the least.
The weirdest part of that game was around the end, the people on my team that were sitting on the floor decided it would be a good idea to make a barrier. So they all sat close together and held their arms up and told us to run through them, as if that would stop the balls from miraculously hitting us. And, as you can imagine, it totally worked.
.........

The second game we played was pretty much the original dodgeball, with the one exception that you cannot use the balls as shields. In other words, my strategy for this game just got screwed too.

However, I used my strategy of staying unnoticed until the end, and then my team actually won!

And then, surprise surprise, we played one last type of dodgeball. The worst. The mother of all dodgeball games. The ones you see in horror movies. (And by horror I mostly mean stereotyped movies and shows about high school.)

A free for all.

Suffice to say I was out within 4 seconds. I tried to make alliances, but I was betrayed.

In the end, it was one of the most exciting days of Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed I've had yet. It gave me really good material. I'm still trying to decide if it was worth it.

Peace!

Book Review: The Kite Runner

This is the part where half of my friends disown me because what I'm about to say will shock them to their socks.

Confession: I don't really read that much...

*ducks as rotten fruit and beer cans get thrown at my face*

Ok ok ok. So when I get a good book, I can sit down and read it for hours. But I read a book maybe once every few months. I'm just not the type of person who is always reading a new book or looking for a new book to read. For instance, I would never have read The Kite Runner if I I wasn't supposed to read a book of my choice for english.
But I heard it was good, so I gave it a chance.

Confession Number 2: I do not cry during books and movies. Like, ever. I cried when I read Harry Potter 7, four years ago. I cried when I saw Titanic for the first time. I cried during Toy Story 3, but only a little bit.

...The Kite Runner made me cry like a little girl. I just sat down to read this book because I need something to read for english, and I was instantly hooked. I could not put this book down. I read it all in one morning.
And it totally made me cry.

The Kite Runner is the story of a boy, Amir, growing up in Afghanistan. He has a best friend, Hassan, who is also his servant, and is essentially the minority, or the lower class that is discriminated against. It is also the story of Amir's strained relationship with his father.

The book is full of plot twists, and irony. You instantly feel connected to the characters, feel their pain, experience their sorrows. Khaled Hosseini is a brilliant author. At first I thought the story itself didn't really sound that great, and I was afraid it would be a hard book to read. But I was sooooo so so wrong. It wasn't hard to read or understand at all. And even though the story sounds really cliched it is really a very unique and touching story. It's so interesting to see Afghanistan and America through the eyes of an Afghan. I now have a completely different perspective of Afghanistan than I did before.

Honestly, if you haven't read this, then you haven't lived. Go read it pronto.

Ten stars out of ten. Simply brilliant.

Peace!

Blogging Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed: Part 6.

Yep, I'm ready for churchball.

I played such a good game today, you don't even know. Even with Cole CONSTANTLY guarding me, (even when I was on his team...) I was still able to make some sweet shots. It feels pretty good. Let's just say I played so good that every time I made a shot, Jimmer Fredette felt that somehow, somewhere, a small teenage girl just made a basket. And I'm serious, too.

Today wasn't all fun and games though. We took a test. Which actually has a lot more significance than one would think.
First of all, I've never been able to comprehend why one would take a test in P.E. Why would a teacher even give a test? Especially in a dumb I need a PE credit so I'm taking this random elective where I can do nothing and get away with it class. It was a ten question quiz about the right way to play basketball. And it was worth like 50 points!! Was it easy? Yes. It was probably the easiest test I've taken all year. But honestly, the whole concept escapes me. Sports are for running around and getting sweaty. Tests are for sitting in a desk and...being unhappy.

Second of all, one of the questions on the test was "Did you improve in anything about basketball this unit?"
It was definitely my favorite. I circled YES with enthusiasm. I put a box around it. And then a circle. Then a triangle. And last of all, a heart. I approved of that question entirely.

Personally, I am heartbroken that our basketball unit is over. Do you know what we are doing next? VOLLEYBALL!! Freak!! I can't play volleyball! It's an awesome sport, really. But I play tennis. Honestly, any sport I have to play without a racquet in my hand escapes me.

So....people...be excited. This is going to be one intense unit.

Peace!

Blogging Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed: Part 5

I...am in pain.

Lets start with a backstory.
Back in October, I played the best tennis tournament of my life. I got to the quarterfinals and beat the 4th seed. And for me, who wasn't even on the ladder last season...it was pretty big.
However I left that tournament hardly being able to walk. And so I didn't play tennis, or any sports, because every time I did, my knee would hurt like a mother. So thats why I wear that dumb brace on my knee whenever I play, because some doctor told me to. And guess what, it isn't helping. But that's another story.

The point is, today, I left class hardly able to walk.

This is both a good and a bad thing, but mostly a bad thing.
It's good, because it means I actually tried today and played my best (kind of) and participated and exercised. Which sadly would be the first time this year.
It's bad, because it means that exercising still hurts my knee.

Or, it could mean that I just got really beat up today.

It all started when I was doing some sort of partner assessment thing with Cole. I had to try to make some baskets, and what mostly ended up happening was I would shoot the ball, it would bounce off the rim, and Cole would go chasing after it and pass it back to me. Now. In his defense, I wasn't paying attention. But when he passed the ball back he did succeed in hitting me more than once. Like...in the face. Which really hurts, for some reason. I couldn't tell you why.
I did manage to score some shots though, which was quite an improvement from last time. Ummm lets see lets see what else. I felt like an idiot only scoring .001% of my shots but Cole's advice for me (dancing around to Lady Gaga) didn't seem like it would be very effective. So...that's what happened.

Then when we were playing a game against like half the class, Cole thought it would be a good idea to see how many times he could foul me. So basically he would just come up to me and push me around (btw, I could totally tell that he was wearing Old Spice. Pure Sport to be exact. I would know this because I spray it around Kate's room every time I go to her house. What I don't understand is why would you spray on the good stuff before you run around and get all smelly? Wouldn't you want to put it on afterwards?)

Anyways, I ended up on the ground a lot, and have a few new lovely bruises. It's no big deal though. I will take it...like a woman!!!

That's pretty much it. I actually scored some hoops today!! I'm getting better at this, just in time for churchball.
Which I may or may not also blog about. Stay tuned.

January: A Month in Review.

I think I'm going to start the tradition of reviewing each month and seeing what was good/bad and what I'm looking forward to this month. Juuuuust because I can, and it's something to blog about besides Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed.

I would give January a 7 out of 10. Nothing really big happened this month. Lets take a look:

Since it was the beginning of the year though, I set a lot of goals and new years resolutions that some have lasted and some didn't get past the first week.
I went to my third doctor and he cleared that I could play tennis again if I just did what he said. And...I did what he said and he turned out to be a big fat liar. Thank you, Mr. PhD. Just because I am not a BYU football player doesn't mean that the sport I play and who I play for is not important.

This month was the beginning of a new semester, which meant 4 new classes for me. Basketball/Volleyball Co-ed, which I'm not going to talk about here; Baker's TA, which is pretty awesome; A different period of math, which isn't exactly a new class but is still a change and a good one at that; a new seminary class that....mehr. Not even gonna talk about that...at all.

I saw Tangled - twice. It was a good thing.

I went job hunting...and was pretty much unsuccessful.

I had my ups and downs in every category of life I can possibly come up with. School, work, (or the lack thereof), tennis (again, the lack thereof), friends, boys, church or any church related activity.
Okay so there were mostly downs. Lack of ups. You get the idea.

However, I'm giving it a 7 out of 10 cuz it wasn't too shabby for the first month of the year. The first month for me is always a little shakey. And it's always seemed to go uphill from January.

Things I'm looking forward to in February:
Well, today I found out who the new principal is, and it's not Monks, so that's a really nice start.
My dad is also going to hire me today or tomorrow, which means I will finally have a job.
While all of my friends are on tour (which I'm not jealous of, by the way. I've been to Disneyland hundreds of times. I go there every year, like 2 or 3 times. Okay maybe that's a slight exaggeration so I've only been a few times. Okay okay I've only been once. Okay whatever I've never been there before but it's no big deal it's just the happiest place on earth with all your friends getting to chill together and room together and go see broadway shows like I said it's no big deal I'm not jealous who said I was jealous pffft thats just dumb) I'M GOING TO GO SEE THE JUSTIN BIEBER MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Never say never, 3D. With Matt and Mike, who I believe want to dress up as the J-Biebs himself. So I'm actually really excited for this.
I'm also going to see Tangled again. I don't know when or with who but it'll happen.
I'm planning a date with my soulmate Dani...and I'm planning it for the 18th so that if I get asked to sweethearts I'll be going on 2 dates in one weekend. Which would just be awesome.
School off on Presidents day. Not that big but....school not happening is always a good thing.

So! All in all February looks like it'll shape out to be an excellent month. And 2011 still looks like it'll be a fantastic year.

Peace!
